Avowed’s Release Delayed to Early 2025
8/02/2024Avowed’s Release Delayed to Early 2025: What You Need to Know
Avowed, the highly anticipated action roleplaying game from Obsidian Entertainment, is reportedly facing a delay from its original Fall 2024 release window to early 2025. This news comes from a paywalled report by The Verge’s Tom Warren.
Why the Delay?
According to Warren, the delay is not due to any issues with the game’s development. On the contrary, sources indicate that the game is progressing well. The decision to delay is attributed to Microsoft and/or Obsidian’s desire to provide the game with more “breathing room” away from a crowded release schedule.
Competing Titles
Fall 2024 is set to be a busy period for triple-A action roleplaying games, with titles like Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard all slated for release. Notably, Bloodlines 2 is absent from Gamescom, suggesting it might also face delays.
Developer Confidence
Despite the delay, Obsidian Entertainment remains confident in the game’s quality. Carrie Patel, the Game Director, expressed optimism about the game’s progress following the Xbox Game Showcase in June. She mentioned that the team is putting significant effort into polishing the game, and they feel positive about its 2024 prospects.
Game Details
Set in the universe of Eora, originally created for the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Avowed offers a first-person (with optional third-person view) action experience. The game aims to appeal to a broader audience by removing classes and focusing on mainstream gameplay elements. Josh Sawyer, who led the development of the Pillars of Eternity games, has contributed to maintaining the core tenets and spirit of the franchise.
Comparisons and Expectations
Avowed is expected to be shorter than traditional cRPGs, with Obsidian likening it to their previous first-person action RPG, The Outer Worlds, which has a main quest that can be completed in approximately thirteen hours. The game will be available on PC and Xbox Series S|X, and Game Pass subscribers will have access to it on day one.
