World of Warcraft: Awakening - Expansion

Here is everything you need to know about the latest World of Warcraft expansion leak:

  • World of Warcraft: Awakening is said to be the first expansion of Classic+, which is a branch of WoW Classic that explores alternative timelines and scenarios.
  • The expansion is based on the idea of "what if the Dark Portal had never been opened?", which means that the events of The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, and Cataclysm never happened or happened differently.
  • The expansion is reportedly led by Chris Metzen, the former creative director of Blizzard Entertainment, who retired in 2016. He is known for his work on Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo franchises.
  • The expansion uses the then unused assets from TBC, WotLK and Cataclysm, such as zones, models, and music. Some of these assets were data-mined from the game files or shown in concept art, but never implemented in the live game.
  • The level cap is raised to 70, and two new playable races are added: High Elves for the Alliance and Ogres for the Horde. High Elves are similar to Blood Elves, but with blue eyes and different hairstyles. Ogres are large and brutish humanoids, who can wield two-handed weapons in one hand.
  • The expansion does not add any new continents, but instead expands on existing zones such as Hyjal and Emerald Dream. Hyjal is a sacred mountain where the World Tree Nordrassil stands, and Emerald Dream is a verdant realm of nature and magic. Both zones were inaccessible in Classic, but were later added in Cataclysm.
  • The goal of the expansion is to bring the story arcs of Classic to an end before they are lost to time with the appearance of the Burning Legion. The main antagonist is the Scourge, the undead army that threatens to destroy Azeroth. The first raid tier is focused on fighting against the Scourge and their leader, the Lich King.
  • The expansion is said to be released in 2024, along with the 20th anniversary of World of Warcraft. However, this date may change depending on the development progress and feedback from the players.
  • The price of the expansion is speculated to be $49.99, which is the same as the base edition of Dragonflight, the latest expansion for WoW Retail. However, this price may also change depending on the market demand and competition.
  • The announcement of the expansion is expected to happen at BlizzCon 2023, which is a convention for Blizzard fans and gamers that usually takes place in November.
