Marvel's Spider-Man 2 - Review

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 delivers Insomniac's best tale yet, and despite its open world falling short, is a reliably fun superhero power trip.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is a web-slinging wonder that delivers on the promise of its predecessors and then some. The game lets you play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, each with their own unique abilities and storylines, as they face off against a new threat that involves Kraven the Hunter, Venom, and other familiar foes. The game is packed with thrilling action, emotional drama, and spectacular visuals that make you feel like you're in a blockbuster movie.

The gameplay is largely similar to the previous Spider-Man games, but with some new additions and improvements. You can switch between the two Spider-Men at any time, and each one has their own skill tree, gadgets, and suits to unlock and customize. The combat is fast and fluid, with plenty of options to web up enemies, dodge attacks, use environmental objects, and unleash powerful finishers. The game also introduces a new perfect parry mechanic that rewards precise timing and adds more depth to the combat. The web-swinging is as satisfying as ever, with smooth animations and realistic physics that make you feel the thrill of soaring through the city. The game also features some new traversal mechanics, such as wall-running, zip-lining, and gliding, that add more variety and fun to the movement.

The story is one of the strongest aspects of the game, as it explores the personal struggles and relationships of both Spider-Men, as well as their bond as mentor and protege. The game does a great job of balancing the light-hearted humor and banter with the darker and more serious moments, creating a compelling narrative that keeps you invested in the characters and their fates. The game also features some surprising twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The voice acting is superb, with Yuri Lowenthal and Nadji Jeter reprising their roles as Peter and Miles respectively, and Tony Todd providing a menacing voice for Venom. The game also features some impressive performances from other cast members, such as Laura Bailey as Mary Jane Watson, Tara Platt as Yuri Watanabe, and Eric Lopez as Harry Osborn.

The game looks stunning on the PS5, with crisp graphics, realistic lighting, and detailed textures that bring New York City to life. The game also takes advantage of the PS5's features, such as the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback of the DualSense controller, which add more immersion and feedback to the gameplay. The game also features ray tracing, which adds realistic reflections and shadows to the environment. The game runs smoothly at 60 frames per second in performance mode, or at 30 frames per second in fidelity mode with enhanced visuals. The game also features fast loading times thanks to the PS5's SSD, which makes traveling between different areas seamless.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is a must-play for fans of Spider-Man and superhero games in general. It is a worthy sequel that improves upon the already excellent formula of the previous games, while adding new elements and surprises that make it stand out. It is a game that will make you laugh, cry, cheer, and gasp as you experience the highs and lows of being Spider-Man. It is a game that will make you feel amazing.
