8/01/2019A slice of the gaming community has been defending the difficulty of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, with some saying that it’s the “creators’ vision” to make a tough game. And then for Age of Wonders: Planetfall, an upcoming turn-based strategy game from Triumph, some fans are upset that the studio has changed the setting from fantasy to science fiction.
And this is just a small amount of anger compared to some other things going on in gaming these days. Folks are upset that Epic and Discord have launched alternatives to Steam, nevermind that these shops are giving developers a bigger cut. They may not have the features that Steam has, but these will surely come. Remember: Steam was a mess when it launched. And when it comes to finding games on Steam, it can be a mess for customers, too.
All this acrimony just makes me tired. PC gamers got it better than ever before. Remember DOS command lines to launch games? Separate launchers for each game? Messing with jumpers on motherboards when installing RAM chips? Sound cards? Heck, ejecting discs? Double-heck — having to go to the mall to buy games? All of these hassles are gone.
Upgrading rigs is easier than ever before. I can boot up one of several launchers and play dozens of games. And with the proliferation of sales and bundles, budget-minded players can dig in
